San Diego, CALI. - It was back to assigned lanes for the Unlimited Hydroplane drivers in San Diego. After a season of modified fighting-for-lanes, the concern over slow speeds and damage to the equipment due to the salt water content of the race course moved officials to go to assigned lanes.
Dave Villwock in the U-96 Spirit of Qatar didn't seem to care much either way, showing off the boat's dazzling speed by winning two heat races even though he started in lane five. Villwock went three-for-three in heat races and won the winner-take-all-final.
Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto had a stellar weekend as well. Although he came up short in the final race, finishing third, David won all three of his heat races as well.
It was another strong showing for the U-17 Miss Red Dot team. with three second place finishes in three heats and a second place finish in the finals.
