With the Inland Northwest drenched in record-setting heat it may be hard to believe that the Spokane Chiefs' regular season starts in less than two weeks. It's hockey time!

The Chiefs suffered their first loss of the preseason, losing 3-2 in a shootout with Tri-City on Saturday. Spokane is now 4-1 and will play two more games this week's against the Americans.

Spokane is excited, not only for the regular season but for because of the progress they have made.

"This is a time for the guys to step up and show us what they're made of," said Chiefs' goalie Marc Engel. "We kind of always rely on our top eight guys. It's kind of the guys below who play under their shadow who step up and shine. It's their time to show us who they are and make the squad."

Engel played all 65 minutes in the net for the Chiefs and stopped 17 of 19.

The Chiefs' preseason ends next Saturday when they travel to Kennewick to play the Americans on their home ice. The two teams will play the first two games of the regular season each other opening at home one week apart.
