The Whitworth Pirates pillaged their opponent on Saturday, dominating Pomona-Pitzer 34-7. But now comes a real test.

The Pirates, now 1-1 on the season, prepare to host No. 20 Redlands on Saturday at the Pine Bowl. Redlands (1-0) has not played since knocking off No. 4 North Central 35-29 at home on September 3.

"[Redlands is] an outstanding team with most of their starters back from last year and they deserve to be ranked in the top 20," said head coach John Tully in a statement this week. "They are very well coached. It will be a tough challenge for our team, but a challenge we look forward to."

Whitworth will surely try to duplicate what it did last week on offense, outgaining the Sagehens 317-231 due to a powerful running attack. Ronnie Thomas carried ten times for 84 yards and a score, and four other runners combined for four touchdowns as the Bucs averaged 5.4 yards per attempt on the ground.

Bryan Peterson and Zac Hill – both from Spokane – split time behind center. Peterson threw a touchdown and ran for a score.

Whitworth struggled last year against the Bulldogs, losing 23-7 on the road. It was a game in which the offense gained just 203 yards and converted just 3-of-14 third down attempts. Redlands leads the series 5-3, including the last four in a row.

Saturday's game will be shown tape-delayed on SWX-TV immediately following the EWU vs. Montana game at 12 Noon.
