A former Pac-10 official who now advises Pac-12 members said Monday the ‘O' sign players make with their hands to celebrate a successful play is okay. Just don't flash it too long.
Mike Pereira said, while watching the Oregon game over the weekend, the ‘O' hand signs bordered on being unsportsmanlike. He vowed to talk it over with the Ducks head coach Chip Kelly – which he did. He also spoke with the Pac-12's coordinator of officiating. After hearing all sides, Pereira said "it's OK for the Oregon players to quickly flash the ‘O' sign to celebrate a good play. But it must not be prolonged and cannot be directed at an opponent."
He also said "if the salute is directed at an opponent in a taunting gesture, it would be deemed to be a foul."
Here is a story from KVAL.com which includes opinions from Oregon players on the matter.
