Idaho Loses Season Opener to Bowling Green 32-15

MOSCOW, Idaho - Not in his worst nightmares was the debut of the 2011 Vandals what University of Idaho coach Robb Akey envisioned. The 32-15 loss to Bowling Green State was far from what he expected from a team that showed great promise throughout fall camp.

"I'm really disappointed in the way we played tonight," said Akey after the Thursday night game before 12, 173 fans. "I don't like what I saw from this team."

What he saw was the Vandals start hot with a 78-yard scoring drive on their first possession follow with a drive stop - then the wheels fell off as Bowling Green State unloaded for 30 successive points that extended through the first half and left the Falcons sporting a 30-7 halftime lead.

It was bits and pieces of all phases of the game that haunted the Vandals.

"Defensively," Akey said, "we struggled. We can't let ourselves get depth-charged like that. ... I don't know how many passes we dropped tonight but we had to set a record. It snowballed you could say."

The Vandals mustered just 280 yards total offense - 228 passing and 52 rushing, while yielding 478 to a team that had the ball twice as long as they did. It wasn't just offense and defense that cost Idaho. Struggles on punt returns left the Vandals with miserable field position and ultimately to a fourth-quarter safety.

"We did not execute well. It hurts me to say that," Akey said. "It comes down to one word. Discipline. Do what you're supposed to do when you're supposed to do it."

There were some bright spots with junior college transfer Mike Scott's six receptions for 89 yards and junior Gary Walker's 13 tackles along with junior linebacker Conrad Scheidt's 10 stops.
