A lot of people surrounding the Washington State football program – from the school officials on down to the fans – say they smell something in the air in Pullman. They sense a bowl game coming on this season.

Not so fast.

As a Matter of Fact, I think that "something in the air" might be fear.

I know Paul Wulff inherited a down program. They didn't have Pac-10-caliber players and they lost some scholarships as well. But these players are all his.

First off, consider the Cougars' offensive line. The line struggled last year, giving up 51 sacks last year. That has to be improved.

Secondly, Wulff is 5-32 in three seasons. 5-32. So let's not come out and say he's going to get six wins. Let's say he can double that – maybe five wins. You have to crawl before you walk.

The defense also has to improve. They were ranked near the bottom last year: 107th in total defense and 110th against the pass.

I say let's be realistic. If Wulff wins five games, then he doubles what he's done in three seasons. Let's not be saying "bowl games", "bowl wins", and "bowl seasons".

And realistically, if Wulff doesn't get five wins this season, fans next year will be talking about a new head coach. Do you smell that in the air?
