In reality, Monday's release of the FCS preseason coaches poll was more of a formality than anything else. But Eastern Washington is sure happy to be on top!

The Eagles received 23 of the 28 first-place votes for 687 points overall – more than enough to put them comfortable at No. 1 to begin the season. The Eagles won the FCS championship last season.

This week's honors follow's last week's news that the Eagles were No. 1 in the Sports Network/Fathead.com preseason poll.

"Next year at this time I would like to see us up near the top again," said head coach Beau Baldwin. "It means you've done good things the year before. We love the fact we are No. 1 and appreciate the recognition."

The Eagles return 15 starters from last year's championship team that notched a school-record 13 wins and two losses. A total of 12 players on this year's team have already received preseason honors, including two who have received All-America honors at the NCAA FCS level.

Eastern Washington starts the season Sept. 3 at Washington. They play at South Dakota on Sept. 10 and at Montana on Sept. 17 before finally opening at home against Montana St. on Sept. 24.
