A scheduling conflict at CenturyLink Field (formerly known as Qwest Field) has caused the cancellation of the annual Battle in Seattle football game between Central Washington University and Western Oregon University. The game had been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8.

Instead of playing in Seattle for the ninth consecutive year, CWU will now move the scheduled game against WOU to Tomlinson Stadium on the Ellensburg campus on Oct. 8, with kickoff tentatively set for 1 p.m. Feasible arrangements to keep the game in Seattle at an alternative location could not be secured, necessitating the relocation of the game to CWU.

Central Washington began the annual Battle in Seattle game with rival Western Washington University in 2003, playing the rival Vikings for six consecutive years before WWU discontinued its football program after the 2008 campaign. CWU then continued its annual venture to the home of the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks in 2009 and 2010, facing Western Oregon each time, and the two schools were slated to continue their series in 2011. However, a late schedule change by the Seattle Sounders FC, one of the primary tenants of CenturyLink Field, left the Wildcats scrambling for alternative locations if the game was to be played in the Seattle area. CWU won seven of the previous eight Battles in Seattle, and hopes to negotiate with CenturyLink Field to resume playing the annual game at the venue in 2012.

The change means that Central Washington will play five home games at Tomlinson Stadium this fall, beginning with the Sept. 2 Rodeo Bowl contest against Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Home games will also be played each of the first three Saturdays in October, with Simon Fraser visiting on Oct. 1 and Humboldt State serving as the Wildcats' Homecoming opponent on Oct. 15. The home schedule concludes with a Nov. 12 game against Dixie State.
