Detroit, MICH - Talk about parity. There were six different winners in six heat races for Detroit's Gold Cup unlimited hydroplane racing trophy.
The U-96 had mechanical problems in its first heat, but the boat involved in last week's crash at Madison made it for the second heat and veteran Dave Villwock got a heat win. The other boat in the crash, U-1, was out of commission for this week's racing as was driver Steve David. Jon Zimmerman filled in for David, racing in a rented boat (U-9) as the U-1.
