It was another pitchers dual, with the Mariners' Jason Vargas allowing just five hits. One of his few mistakes came in the first inning when Scott Sizemore tagged him for a one-run home run. Sizemore hit again in the fifth, driving in the second and last score of the day for either team.

On any other day, Vargas would be in the win column with performance like that: eight innings, two runs, one walk and a strikeout. But the Mariners couldn't muster any offense at all. None. Zip. Zilch. Zippo. Nada.

Since July 1, the fab five from Seattle – Vargas, Felix Hernandez, Michael Pineda, Doug Fister and Blake Blevin - have allowed just 26 runs in 47 innings, good enough for a microscopic 1.14 ERA in six starts. But they've gone just 4-2 over that stretch.

The Mariners play at Anaheim on Thursday, with the first pitch at 7:05 (PT)
