MADISON 2011: Unlimited Hydroplane hits rescue boat in heat race

UPDATE:  Three people from the patrol boat have been transported to the local hospital.

MADISON, Indiana - An unlimited hydroplane apparently ran into one of the rescue boats that sits inside the boat course, drawing a gasp from the crowds on the shores in Madison, Indiana and worries about the rescue workers on the boat.

Brian Perkins in the U-21 unlimited hydroplane was racing in Heat 3A on Sunday when he apparently missed a buoy.  Perkins had slowed a bit and turned into the infield area to turn back and get back on track.  He collided with a rescue boat.

The U-21 was throwing off smoke for a short time.  Perkins popped the cockpit open and got out on his own.  Rescue divers went in the water.  Perkins appeared to be OK.

The three on the rescue boat were transported to King's Daughters' Hospital (KDH) in Madison, Indiana to get checked out.

The U-21 was towed back into the pits.
