Things got a little bit interesting on Saturday night for the Spokane Shock. But they were able to hold on and beat Chicago because of their defense, which interestingly enough outplayed the vaunted Chicago 'D' - the best defense in the league.

Spokane registered two interceptions, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and five sacks in the game. All that helped the Shock hold on for a 63-60 win after losing starting quarterback Erik Meyer in the third quarter because of a concussion.

All that makes for a happy Coach Keefe. And if Coach Keefe is happy, the whole Shock family is happy.

"The expectation for us is so high - especially on defense," said Keefe, who himself was a defensive specialist as a player. "We still gave away touchdowns that we shouldn't have. It's not a knock on those guys, I just feel we can always be better. Now, if we beat Orlando, if we beat Arizona, we beat Philadelphia, we beat Chicago - these are all teams that are going to be in the playoffs. I expect more, and I think we're just going to keep pushing these guys."

In reality, the Shock's defense has pulled more than its fair share over the past several games. The 60 points they allowed Chicago was the most since April 30 when they let Arizona put up 69 - a game Spokane won by one point in Spokane. They held Kansas City to just 34 points and 45 points. Dallas scored just 49 in May.

The Shock's next challenge is a road game at New Orleans. At 2-11 the VooDoo is the only AFL team statistically out of the playoff picture. That said, they're not a team to overlook because, as Keefe says, this isn't the af2 anymore. Every team is good. Every team could pull an upset card out of its back pocket and wreck someone's plans.

"We should take care of business," said Keefe. "That's not a knock on them, but on paper right now if we take care of the things we can take care of we should come out with a win."
