Former University of Idaho defensive tackle and basketball post player Mao Tosi was recognized on the Today Show Monday for his efforts in working with at-risk youth in his hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. Tosi's AK P.R.I.D.E. project, which he founded in 2006, was this year's first recipient of the Lend A Hand program. NBC's Al Roker was in Anchorage to host the show, which included $1.9 million in donations to Tosi's program.
The gifts, Tosi said, will enable AK P.R.I.D.E. to reach its goal of blanketing Alaska with enriching youth programs today instead of two or three years from now. Tosi was born in American Samoa but was raised in Anchorage, Alaska, and is a graduate of East High School. After high school, he went to Butler Community College to play basketball. He joined the Vandals as a basketball player but quickly added football to his Idaho agenda and became a part of two of the most memorable years in Idaho history, which includes the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl championship.
