Cougs Rally Past CSUB

Posted: Updated:

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Washington State scored three times in the top of the seventh inning and defeated Cal State Bakersfield 4-3 in the rubber match of a three-game nonconference baseball series Sunday at Hardt Field.

Trailing 3-1 after six innings, the Cougars (2-1) received a leadoff double in the seventh from Adam Nelubowich followed by Trace Tam Sing's RBI-single. With two outs, Taylor Ard belted his second home run in as many days to give Washington State a 4-3 lead.

The rally made a winner out of James Wise (1-0) who pitched six and one-third innings, gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits, walked three, and struck out six. Freshman J.D. Leckenby recorded five outs of shutout ball in his collegiate debut and Paris Shewey pitched the ninth for his first save.

"This was a good weekend for us because we found ourselves in three tight games and a lot of situations that we can learn from," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Our new guys came through for us today in a big way from Trace Tam Sing to Adam Nelubowich to J.D. Leckenby and Taylor Ard gave us the big hit we needed."

Washington State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Tam Sing and Brett Jacobs singled to put runners at the corners. Jacobs was cut down attempting to steal second and Tam Sing came home on the throw.

The Roadrunners (1-2) recorded four of their five hits against Wise in the fourth inning and took advantage of an error to score three times and take a 3-1 lead.

Cal State Bakersfield threatened in the ninth against Shewey when it put runners at first and second with one out. Shewey squelched the rally when he induced Andrew Letourneau to ground into a game-ending double play.

Washington State will play its home opener Friday against UC Santa Barbara at Bailey-Brayton Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
