The North Central girls basketball team made history Thursday night, beating Shadle Park 51-38 in the District 8 3A championship. With the win, the Indians earned their first trip to the state tournament in girls basketball. First ever.

The way they did it is even more impressive. Going into district tournament as the No. 2 seed, Shadle beat them in the first game 63-50. Then they beat University. Then they turned the tables on Shadle, beating them Wednesday to force a loser-out game three.

Coach Gabe Medrano challenged his team after their first loss. Just read what he told Greg Lee of the Spokesman-Review:

"I said, ‘If you don't believe you can win three in a row, then let me know and don't come.' You've got to believe or otherwise it won't happen."

The Indians will go to the state regional play-in as the No. 1 seed. Shadle's season is over, given that the GSL gets just one team in the state tournament this year.

Like the girls team, the North Central boys team also did some upsetting of their own, beating top seeded University 62-48 to make it into the state regional play-in.

Senior guard gave the Titans fits, scoring a game high 24, including three 3-pointers. Gunnar Swaggar added 13 for the Indians.

Zech Martin led the Titans with 20 points, including four 3-pointers.
