AFL writer BJ Pickard addressed the question a lot of indoor football fans want to know: Can Spokane win the title again this year?

The basic conclusion: not likely, based on the history of the AFL. But then again, this isn't your father's – or your big brother's – Arena Football League, either.

Here's an except from the article published Tuesday on arenafootball.com:

"To repeat is difficult in any sport, but it seems to be particularly challenging in the AFL. Orlando couldn't quite pull it off in 1999 and San Jose came up three points short in 2008. In fact, only two teams have been able to capture back-to-back championships in the entire history of the league – and the last time that happened was in 1996 when Jay Gruden quarterbacked the Tampa Bay Storm to victory over Kurt Warner's Iowa Barnstormers in ArenaBowl X.

Clearly, repeating is no easy task. There are heightened expectations. There's added pressure. There's a target on your back.

Add to that the challenges every team faces over the course of a season – personnel and coaching changes, injuries, maintaining focus – and it's evident the Spokane Shock have their work cut out for them in 2011."

In the article, quarterback Kyle Rowley admitted repeating last year's success would be difficult. But the goal is still the same: to win.
