ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Wildcats had a chance over the weekend to take their offense for a test drive. What they determined is that Oklahoma State transfer Alex Cate will be the starting quarterback.

Cate and Ryan Robertson, from Sammamish, Wash. split snaps during the scrimmage, but the team's depth chart now puts Cate on the top line.

The team's first game is this weekend against Minnesota Duluth – a game shown live on SWX-TV. Head coach Blaine Bennett said a win Saturday isn't a given.

"I think it all comes down to ball security," said Bennett. "We have to take care of the ball offensively. We have to be very sound in our special teams. During that first game, special teams usually makes a difference – win or lose - and certainly our defense has to come to play."

Bennett believes his defense has a chance to "be another great defense" this year by building on last season's success.

The Wildcats are favored to win the Great Northwest Atlantic Conference again this fall despite returning just seven starters. They're followed in the preseason conference poll by Western Oregon, Dixie State, Humboldt State and Simon Fraser.
