Wild, Wild West Could Leave Vandals High and Dry

Just when you thought the conference shuffle was done this offseason, two more teams are bolting the Western Athletic Conference, jeopardizing that conference's future and with it, the Idaho Vandals.

Both Fresno State and Nevada announced Wednesday night that they have accepted invitations to play in the Mountain West Conference.

The WAC was already bracing for the departure of Boise State, which will also join the MWC.  If BSU, FSU, and Nevada were all to join the MWC, that would leave the WAC with just six schools, two shy of the NCAA minimum for a conference.  Idaho, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Utah State, San Jose State, and New Mexico State would all presumably be left scrambling to join new conferences, or find replacements to replenish the suddenly depleted WAC.

The move may or may not have been prompted by Brigham Young's serious consideration of going independent. Sources say BYU would go it alone in football, but send its minor sports to the WAC - or some other conference. ESPN reported Thursday morning the Cougars' basketball program could be headed to the West Coast Conference, although nothing could be confirmed.
