SPOKANE, Wash. - The Ferris Saxons made a deep run into last year's state playoffs, playing – but losing – in the championship game at the Tacoma Dome. They started their run at a repeat performance Wednesday, as schools from the Spokane area began fall football practice.

The Saxons are hoping to reload this year, and will have to do it with a new quarterback not named Connor Halliday, who now spends his time at Washington State.

"It's early on, so we're just trying to make sure [the players] are eligible and get them back into the swing," said head coach Jim Sharkey. "They work out all summer so they're pretty much ready to go, they're chomping at the bit."

Players won't hit full pads until Saturday.

The Saxons first game is Sept. 3 against University in Spokane Valley.

The first game in the Greater Spokane League is Sept. 2 – Central Valley at Mt. Spokane. The first game broadcast on SWX-TV this season is Lake City at Lakeland Aug. 27 at 7 p.m.
