Longtime Detroit Lions kicker and Spokane native Jason Hanson is recovering from knee surgery.

The graduate of Mead High School, now 40-years-old, underwent a procedure to clean up some cartilage in his non-kicking leg on Tuesday. He had a similar procedure done last year on his kicking knee and didn't miss any games.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he's optimistic Hanson would be on the field Sept. 12 in Chicago.

Hanson, who still maintains a home in north Spokane, has only missed one game since joining the Lions in 1992. He is the franchise's career scoring leader, and holds the NFL record for the most field goals from 50-plus yards.
