McIlroy shoots record round at St. Andrews

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland - Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland has tied the major championship record by shooting a 9-under 63 in the opening round of the British Open.

The 21-year-old got rolling Thursday with an eagle at the par-4 ninth, where he drove the green and rolled in the putt. He then made six birdies on the homeward holes, posting a 30 that tied the back-nine record at the Open.

McIlroy became the 22nd player in golf history to shoot 63 in a major championship. Greg Norman and Vijay Singh have done it twice, and the last player to do it was Tiger Woods at the 2007 PGA Championship.

The early starters took advantage of nearly perfect scoring conditions - little wind and only a sprinkling of rain. The sun even popped out just as McIlroy was finishing.

WORLEY, Idaho - Most of us have heard it by now: name a list of accolades and the relatively new Circling Raven Golf Course has likely been on it. In a little over six years, Circling Raven has made as much noise as any course in this part of the country. It funny, though, that its signature is still the warble of a bird, the sound of the breeze through the grass and the vista that takes your breathe away.More >>

Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg is getting a new addition this summer.  Nine new additions to be exact.  Galena Ridge is set to open a brand new 9-hole golf course there later this month, a course that's literally risen from the ashes of North Idaho's past. The new course lies high in the hills above Kellogg where, historically, the headlines have been more about mining the terrain.More >>
