IDAHO FALLS, Idaho – A contract to keep University of Idaho football coach Robb Akey with the Vandals through the 2014 season was approved Thursday by the University of Idaho Board of Regents/State Board of Education.

The contract maintains the current annual base salary of $165,796.80 with annual media payments beginning at $190,000 per year and increasing by $10,000 each year of the contract. There are seven performance-based contingencies in the salary agreement, which could boost his annual compensation to as much as $514,057.60 in 2011 to $544,057.60 in 2014. The base salary is from state funds; the remainder comes through private fund-raising efforts such as the Coaching Excellence Fund.

"We are committed to keeping our coaches and compensating them at a rate commensurate with our peer institutions," Director of Athletics Rob Spear said. "Robb has taken tremendous steps in revitalizing Vandal football – and the Vandal family.

"The length of the contract demonstrates our belief in his ability to continue the successes of 2009 and to restore the image of Idaho football."

Akey acknowledged the commitment of the school with the five-year pact, which has a positive impact on recruiting.

"I am proud the university appreciates the job we are doing and have offered to keep us around for a while," Akey said. "I believe the time on the contract show our recruits that we have a desire and expectation to continue building our program."

Spear also extended thanks to Vandal boosters and supporters whose generous contributions have supported development of the Coaching Excellence Fund to enhance the coaching salaries to acknowledge the leadership and mentorship roles coaches provide to the university's student-athletes.
