Big inning dooms Zags at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, CA -- Gonzaga University dropped its series-opener at Saint Mary's College 12-5 Friday afternoon. The Gaels (16-26, 7-9 WCC) used a pair of big innings, scoring five runs in the first inning and six more in the fourth to take game one of the West Coast Conference series from the Bulldogs (15-31. 3-10, WCC).

Billy Moon paced the Zags with a 3-for-4 effort, scoring two runs and driving in one as Royce Bolinger added a home run and Chris Sturdivant finished with two hits and two RBI. Drew Heid also added two hits and Mark Castellitto had his team season-high 13-game hitting streak come to an end after going hitless in five at-bats.

Gonzaga picked up a run in the game's opening frame as a pair of walks and an error by the Gaels loaded the bases for the Zags. Clayton Eslick later brought home the game's first run in with a sacrifice fly to center to put GU up 1-0.

Saint Mary's answered in a big way in their half of the inning, putting up five runs off of Bulldogs starting pitcher Cody Martin. The big blow came on a grand slam before the inning's final run came across on a squeeze play.

The Zags followed the Gaels third inning run with a two-run fourth, scoring a run in a RBI-double off the bat of Moon and adding another on a sacrifice fly from Sturdivant to cut he SMC lead to 6-3.

The Gaels again answered, putting the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs to build a 12-3 advantage. SMC used five hits highlighted by a three-run homer in the inning.

Bolinger's homer came with one out in sixth, a solo shot to left field for his seventh of the season. Moon followed with a single through the right side and Sturdivant later picked his second RBI of the game with a triple to right, scoring Moon to make it 12-5.

The Bulldogs continue their series with the Gaels 1  p.m. Saturday.
