Garza sharp in 8-3 blasting of Mariners

SEATTLE - Matt Garza became the American League's first five-game winner and Evan Longoria had the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning off Cliff Lee as the Tampa Bay Rays kept rolling with an 8-3 victory Wednesday night over the Seattle Mariners.

Garza allowed five hits in eight innings before Grant Balfour allowed a run in the ninth, and Ben Zobrist preserved a tie defensively before sparking the decisive rally for the Rays, who are 11-1 on the road. That's the major league's best start away from home since the 2003 Yankees also started 11-1.

Tampa Bay improved to 20-7 overall, extending the best American League start since the 2005 Chicago White Sox.

Mariners pagued by injuries

Jack Wilson's hamstring injury is the latest problem for the Seattle Mariners.

The slick-fielding shortstop bent over after running from second base to third in the third inning Wednesday night against Tampa Bay. A coach called out the team's trainer and, after a brief talk at the mound, Wilson was escorted into the dugout.

Josh Wilson replaced him in the field.

Jack Wilson had reached base on a bunt single earlier in the inning. The Mariners say he has tightness in his right hamstring.

Mariners reliever Mark Lowe has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed disc in his lower back.

Shawn Kelley was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday to take Lowe's roster spot. Kelley was optioned to Tacoma last Friday to make room for Cliff Lee.

Lowe says the back problem first started in the offseason and was aggravated last Sunday when he slipped while fielding a bunt. He was given an epidural on Wednesday in hopes of solving some of the problems with the inflammation.

Lowe is 1-3 with a 3.48 ERA as Seattle's main setup reliever.

Kelley was 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six appearances earlier this season with the Mariners.
