Chiefs Prepare for Bantam Draft

Posted: Updated:

EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- The cyclical nature of the WHL is about to begin again.  Or is it about to end?  For players, it is the first opportunity to be added to a team's 50 player protected list beginning their careers in the league.  For the scouts that spend a year identifying the aforementioned players, it is the light at the end of the tunnel.

"It is a long tedious process," Chiefs Director of Player Personnel Chris Moulton said as he spent a day at home in Fernie, B.C. preparing for Thursday's Annual Bantam Draft. "When Thursday rolls around it is exciting and makes all the work worth it."

The Chiefs will select 17th overall in the first round of the draft that is being held in Edmonton.  It also ends a long month-and-a-half of travelling for the Chiefs head scout.

"I have gone from Manitoba to California, to Vancouver, back to California.  I went from there to Prince George and then to LeDuc (Alberta) and then back home," he said.  "I leave for Edmonton Tuesday."

For Moulton and his staff of 13, preparation for this year's draft began as soon as last year's ended.  On Wednesday night they will get together one final time and finalize the pieces of this year's draft puzzle.

"We work together as a group to finalize the list and will make group decisions," he said.  "The interviews that we have been conducting will help in that process.

"We talk to them about everything.  When you talk to a player, on the phone or in person, you get a good read on how mature they are, how well spoken they are or how much involvement their parents have.

"The last month and a half is very tiring, but overall it's a fun process.  You get to make some kid's dream come true"

Of the 24 players on the Chiefs playoff roster 14 had gone through the bantam draft process, nine were listed by the Chiefs or other WHL clubs and two were products of the CHL Import Draft.

Players eligible for the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft will be 1995-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
