MESA, Ariz. – With senior Amanda Jacobs setting the example, the University of Idaho women's golf team is solidly in the hunt for the 2010 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Championship at Longbow Golf Club.

"Our main goal for the first round is to post a team score that is competitive with the field," said coach Lisa Johnson, whose team is at 308 – four strokes off the leading round of 304 by San Jose State University, and good for fourth with two rounds to play. Hawai`i is second at 305 and Fresno State is third at 306.

"It took us nine holes to adjust our games to fit the course conditions, so we will be better prepared for the next two rounds. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and we look forward to playing two more solid rounds of golf."

Jacobs is at two-over 73 and alone in second after a round that featured five bogeys and three birdies. She is just one stroke back of Hawai`i's Erika Lundberg, who is at one-over 72.Two of Idaho's sophomores – Kayla Mortellaro and Teo Poplawski, are tied for 16th at seven-over 78, while the other two – Annika Karlsson and Friday Nilsson, are at 79 (tie 20th) and 84 (35th), respectively.

"Amanda's leadership was huge," Johnson said. "She showed mental toughness and tenacity by making birdies on her last two holes."
