SPOKANE, Wash. - (from Whitworth University sports information) After leading Whitworth University to a second straight Northwest Conference women's tennis title, and to a second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament, Rachel Burns and Alli Marshall have been named All-Northwest Conference, based on voting by member coaches.
Burns (Jr., Longview, Wash. - Mark Morris), who was a First Team All-NWC honoree, was also chosen as the 2010 NWC Sportswoman of the Year. The sportswoman award is voted on by NWC coaches and recognizes outstanding sportsmanship throughout the course of the season.
Burns, who earned her second straight First Team All-NWC honor, posted a 16-5 overall singles record and 12-4 mark in NWC matches. All of her singles matches were at the #1 slot.
Marshall (So., Salem, Ore. - Sprague), who was a First Team selection in 2009 but is a Second Team choice in 2010, is also on the team for a second straight season. Her overall singles record was 11-11 and she was 10-6 in NWC matches. She played all but one match at #2 singles.
The pair led Whitworth to a 19-4 overall record and 15-1 mark in the NWC. Whitworth won the 2010 NWC tournament over the weekend to clinch the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA DIII playoffs.
