Gonzaga's attempt at defending their West Coast Conference baseball championship begins Friday afternoon in San Francisco. The Zags are scheduled to kick off a three game series against the Dons on Friday at 3 p.m. (PT) in the Bay area. Game two is Saturday, with the third and final game of the series on Sunday.

Gonzaga won the conference title last year by winning the tournament at the end of the season, something that they won't be able to do this year because of a change in format. This year there won't be conference championship series. Instead, the winner at the end of the season gets the only automatic bid to the NCAA postseason. That means, outside of winning the regular season, there isn't a guarantee of a trip to the playoffs - or Omaha.

"It's the most important section of the your season," said coach Mark Machtolff of the conference portion of the Zags 2010 schedule. "It basically comes down to a 21-game pennant drive because you only have 21 games. So you have to be ready to go and be ready to play right off the bat."

Machtolff is wary of starting off the conference season in San Francisco because of the Dons' reputation.

"They usually have pretty good pitching," said WCC Co-Player of the Month Mark Castellitto. "They have kind of a quirky field in downtown San Francisco. We'll be ready for them."

Gonzaga comes into Friday's game after going 1-2 last weekend against Hawaii. They dropped last Friday's game 3-1, came back to beat the Warriors 7-6 in the second game, and then lost the third game 6-5.
