Ms split squads both lose

SURPRISE, Ariz.  - Billy Butler went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs as the Kansas City Royals rallied with a five-run ninth inning to beat a Seattle Mariners split squad 8-7.

Kila Ka'aihue walked with the bases loaded with two out in the ninth to force in the winning run.

Franklin Gutierrez went 3 for 3 with a home run and drove in three runs for the Mariners. Mike Sweeney, a former Royal, also homered and is hitting .577 in eight spring games.

Royals starter Edgar Osuna, a Rule 5 draft pick from the Atlanta Braves, gave up four runs on five hits and two walks in three innings.

Hernandez strikes out 7 in loss to Cleveland

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Felix Hernandez struck out seven over five innings in a Seattle Mariners split squad's 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Thursday. Hernandez allowed three hits, four walks and two runs - one earned - in his third outing.

The Mariners have carefully handled their 23-year-old ace after signing him to a five-year, $78 million contract extension in January.

Cliff Lee, acquired in a December deal to join "King Felix," has an abdominal strain. He threw lightly for five minutes Thursday morning and felt pain.

Bedard is out until at least June following shoulder surgery. Indians starter David Huff gave up five hits and one run - a homer by Jack Wilson - over 4 1-3 innings. The left-hander walked three, including two when he loaded the bases in the fourth.
