SPOKANE, Wash. - The parade of post-season awards for the 2010 Whitworth University men's basketball team has begun. Seniors Nate Montgomery and Eric Beal have been voted to the 2010 D3hoops.com All-West Region team, with Montgomery earning regional Player of the Year honors. In addition the Pirates' post player has been chosen to compete in the inaugural NABC Division III All-Star game this weekend at the DIII final four in Salem, Virginia.

Montgomery (Sr., P, Sammamish, Wash. / Eastlake) received the most votes of all players in the west region, earning West Region Player of the Year. Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their region. SIDs voted for six frontcourt players and four backcourt players, to ensure balance.

Montgomery averaged 16.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, leading the Pirates in both categories. He led the Northwest Conference (and was among NCAA DIII leaders) in field goal percentage (59.8%). He posted 11 double-doubles this season, including three in the four games that encompassed the Northwest Conference and NCAA Tournaments.

Montgomery, who in February was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and Northwest Conference Player of the Year, becomes the first Pirate player to earn the D3hoops.com West Region Men's Player of the Year.

Separate from the D3hoops.com All-Region award, Montgomery is one of 16 seniors from around the country who have been selected to play in the inaugural NABC Division III All-Star game on Saturday before the NCAA DIII tournament championship game in Salem, Virginia. The remaining four players of the total of 20 who will compete in the game will be selected from the two teams that lose in Friday's semifinals, creating two squads of ten players.

Eric Beal (Sr., G, Spokane, Wash. - Concordia Univ. [Calif.]) was selected to the D3hoops.com All-West Region Second Team. The former Greater Spokane League Player of the Year (North Central HS) and standout for the Community Colleges of Spokane finished second on the team in scoring average (14.3) while averaging 5.7 assists per game and 2.0 assists per turnover. He was also the Pirates' most consistent free throw shooter this season, making 82.6% of his attempts.

Whitworth has now had D3hoops.com All-Region honorees in eight of the last nine years.

Whitworth finished 26-3 overall, set a school record with 25 wins in a row, finished 16-0 in the NWC and won the conference tournament. The Pirates advanced to the "sweet 16" of the NCAA Division III tournament for the second time in school history.
