2A: West Valley holds off Hockinson

YAKIMA, Wash. -

West Valley 53, Hockinson 49: Brady Bagby's basket with 53 seconds left snapped a tie and helped lift West Valley of Spokane to a 53-49 first-round victory over Hockinson on Wednesday in the Class 2A boys state tournament.
     
Bagby's basket gave West Valley just its second lead of the half after leading for most of the first half.
     
Matt Roth added two free throws with 2 seconds left for West Valley as Hockinson missed three shots in the final minute and the Eagles hung on.
     
Bagby finished with 18 points, Jake Buchholz had 12 and Roth 10.
     
Joshua Hall scored 18 points for the Hawks (15-9) and Mitchell Tugaw chipped in 14.
     
Hockinson made 9 of 18 shots in the first half, but cooled off after intermission, converting 36 percent (9 of 25) the rest of the way.
     
Roth pulled down 11 of the Eagles' 30 rebounds, while Hall snared nine for the Hawks.

Deer Park 64, Wapato 58: Deer Park is headed to the quarterfinals.  Uconn Peone scored 22 points for the Stags to lead them past Wapato 64-58 in the first round of the boys 2A State Tournament on Wednesday in Yakima. Zack Mohr added 14 points. Kendall Peone and Jared Pyeatt both scored 8.

Cody Nickoloff led Wapato with 17 points and Efrain Reynoso scored 13.

Pullman 44, East Valley (Yak) 25: Shelby Cheslek scored 13 points, including 10 in the second half to help the Greyhounds crushed East Valley of Yakima 44-25 in the first round of the 2A State tournament in Yakima on Wednesday.

Yasamin Mohsenian led East Valley with seven points. The entire Red Devil team shot just 15 percent from the field lost the rebounding battle 50-39.

Pullman advances to play River Ridge in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 4 p.m. East Valley will play Lynden in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m.
