1A Tournament: Freeman girls going to semifinals

Freeman boys could finish as high as 4th

Freeman 60, Onalaska 37: MacKenzie Taylor scored 16 points as third-ranked Freeman took an early lead and raced to a 60-37 quarterfinal victory over Onalaska on Thursday in the Class 1A girls state tournament.

Megan McIntyre added 13 points as the Scotties improved to 24-1. Fifth-ranked Onalaska slipped to 20-7.

Taylor scored 12 of her points in the first half. She also grabbed six rebounds.

Molly McIntyre led Freeman with seven rebounds, while Megan McIntrye and Alyssa Maine pulled down six each. Korina Baker dished out eight assists.

Kalie Ritchey and Autumn Durand led the Loggers with eight points each, and Durand also pulled in nine rebounds.

Freeman 48, Meridian 56: Zach Slesk scored 18 points to lead three Trojans in double figures, and eighth-ranked Meridian beat No. 7 Freeman 56-48 on Thursday in the Class 1A boys state quarterfinals.

Mike Hayes added 15 points and Josiah Sebens 14 as the Trojans (18-7) built a 26-17 halftime lead then held off Freeman down the stretch.

Meridian shot 53 percent in the game, including 56 percent (10 of 18) in the second half. Freeman (19-6) was cold, making just 32 percent (19 of 60) shots.

Taylor Vold scored 19 points to lead Freeman, while Peter Heinen chipped in 12 and Cody Unfred 10.

The Scotties outrebounded Meridian 38-28. Chase Watson grabbed nine for Freeman; Hayes snared eight for the Trojans.

Lakeside (Nine Mile) 40, Toledo 29: Lakeside from Nine Mile Falls could finish as high as 5th in the 1A boys tournament after beating Toledo 40-29 Thursday morning at the Yakima Sun Dome.

Ryan Gunderson and Jacob Erickson both scored 13 for Lakeside, who could finish as high as 5th in the tournament if they continue winning in the losers bracket.  Their next game is Friday at 11 a.m.
