Gonzaga Prep loses in tournament's first overtime game

Posted: Updated:

Federal Way 60, Gonzaga Prep 59 F/OT:

Down 18-6 in the first quarter against No. 1 Federal Way, the Gonzaga Bullpups had their backs up against a wall.  So they did what bulldogs do: they scrapped back and almost – but not quite - won the game. Instead, Federal Way escaped with a 60-59 overtime win and a date with the semifinals.

Ryan Nicholas led the way for Gonzaga Prep, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  Parker Kelly added 17 points and three steals, while Chris Sarbaugh scored 11.

Federal Way came back to within one point in the closing seconds of the game, but Nicholas stopped their comeback when he blocked a shot put by Isiah Umipig with :10 left in the game.  Prep's Kelley wound up with the ball and hit two free throws to extend their lead to three points.  But Federal Way's Jerry Duckworth hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game and send it into overtime – the first overtime of the tournament.

Federal Way retook the lead 53-52 at the 3:10 mark in overtime when Tyrell Lewis grabbed his own miss and tipped it back in for the points. Kelly then took the lead right back, hitting an NBA-range 3-pointer with 2:11 to go in the game.

Umpig fought back for Federal Way though, hitting a layup as time expired to win the game 60-59.  He finished with a game-high 24 points, filling in for Cole Dickerson, who fouled out of the game before the overtime period. Dickerson left the game with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Mead 52, Lake Stevens 45: The Mead Panthers took some of the sting out of Wednesday opening round loss to Kentwood by beating Lake Stevens 52-45 on the consolation side of the boys 4A bracket on Thursday. The win by Mead set up a matchup on Friday against Lincoln at 12:30 p.m.  After losing to Walla Walla on Wednesday, Lincoln bounced back to beat Lake Washington 68-57.

Lewis & Clark 69, Rogers (Puyallup) 49: A day after losing their opening round game against Issaquah, the Lewis and Clark got back to winning with a 20-point thumping of Rogers from Puyallup.  The Tigers on the game 69-49 behind the 13 points of Julia Moravec.  Hayley Hendricksen also scored 13. Mary Blevins added 12 points.

Jordan Asher led Rogers with 17 points, including four 3-pointers.  Nicole Jones added 16.

Lewis and Clark plays again on Friday at 11 a.m.  The best they can finish at the state tournament is 5th.  If they lose their final game they'll finish 8th.
