DeSales 48, Colfax 65: Kayla Johnson's 17 points carried Colfax to a 65-48 victory over DeSales in the first round of the Class 2B girls state tournament on Wednesday, offsetting a 31-point effort from the Irish's Caitlin Duncan.

The defending champion Bulldogs (18-3) will face Wahkiakum in a quarterfinal game on Thursday. DeSales (16-5) plays Orcas Island in a loser-out game.

Despite holding Colfax without a field goal until the final seconds of the first quarter, DeSales still trailed 11-7. Kayleigh Maltone sank all six of her free throws for Colfax, which was 9 of 10 from the line in the first. From there, Colfax steadily pulled away. Johnson's inside bucket with 4:43 left in the second quarter gave the Bulldogs a 22-13 lead.

Maltone finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for Colfax, which outrebounded DeSales 45-24.

Duncan finished 7 of 16 from the floor and 15-of-17 from the foul line for the Irish.
