Whitworth swept on first day at College of Idaho

CALDWELL, Idaho - Whitworth University lost a heartbreaker in the nightcap of its non-conference baseball doubleheader at the College of Idaho on Saturday afternoon when pinch-hitter Jared Arehart singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the hosts to a come-from-behind 3-2 win. The Coyotes rolled to an 11-2 victory in the opener.

With the two losses the Pirates fell to 1-8 this season while C of I improved to 9-2 with its eighth straight victory.

The Coyotes jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, added three more in the fifth and four in the sixth before Whitworth could get on the board. C of I starter Ben Rosen held the Bucs to only a pair of hits in his six innings of work.

Whitworth finally broke through with two runs in the seventh on Marlowe Peter's two-run double.

Ben George started on the mound for the Pirates and fell to 1-1 on the season.

Whitworth took a 2-1 lead through four innings of the nightcap. Landon Scott singled home Greg Hata in the third inning for a 1-0 advantage. Then Nathan Johnson singled in John Rausch in the fourth to give the Bucs the lead back.

The Pirates held the lead into the bottom of the seventh when two seeing-eye singles, followed by a sacrifice fly, tied the game. Arehart's single through the left side of the infield won it in the next at-bat.

Liam O'Brien went the distance and took the tough loss for Whitworth, falling to 0-2.

Scott finished the day with three hits in seven at-bats for the Pirates.

The teams will finish the three game series with a single on Sunday at noon.
