Pilkinton Posts 27 Points in the Whitworth Women Loss

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The University of Puget Sound hit 55% of its shots from the field on Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse, earning an 81-74 Northwest Conference women's basketball victory over the host Pirates.

The 17th-ranked Loggers improved to 19-3 overall and 11-2 in the NWC while the Pirates fell to 11-11, 7-6 after dropping their second straight game to a nationally-ranked opponent.

Puget Sound was especially hot in the first half, making 67% (14-21) from the field, including 63% (5-8) from three-point range. The Loggers took an 11-point lead late in the half before Whitworth's Katie Delaney hit a three-pointer from the corner to cut the margin to 45-37 at halftime.

The Pirates got within 51-48 early in the second half on a basket by Liz Horiatis and were still within 58-53 with 10:28 to play. But Puget Sound scored the next eight points, including a pair of three-pointers by Kesley McKinnis, to open up a 66-53 margin. The Loggers' largest lead was 72-57 with 5:30 to play following a three-point play by Sha'Ran Lowe. Cassie Pilkinton hit a couple of late three-pointers to bring the final margin back under double-digits.

Puget Sound finished 55.3% (26-47) from the floor, 56% (9-16) from three-point range. UPS also made 83% (20-24) of its shots from the free throw line.

Whitworth did not shoot poorly, making 45% from the field and 39% from three-point range, but the Pirates could not keep pace with the Loggers.

Claire Ely led UPS with 20 points and five assists. Jocelyn Riordan added 17 points and five rebounds, while Lindsay Layland finished with 15 points and eight boards.

Pilkinton finished with a career-high 27 points, surpassing her previous high of 25 against Pacific Lutheran last season. She also led the Bucs with seven rebounds and five assists. Horiatis added 13 points.

Whitworth will try to solidify is NWC playoff position on Saturday night when the Pirates host PLU.
