Chiefs can't capitalize on power plays, lose to Kootenay 4 - 3

SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite two Kyle Beach goals and a 2-8 night on the power play, the Spokane Chiefs dropped a one goal decision to the Kootenay Ice, 4-3, on Saturday night in the Spokane Arena. Of the seven goals scored, four were through special teams including all three Chiefs goals.

Kootenay took a 1-0 lead at 17:10 of the first on a Kevin King goal, a second try on a rebound of a Joey Leach shot.

The Chiefs first goal was a part of a flurry of penalties that resulted in Spokane skating on a two-man advantage for the remaining 1:43 of the first and an extended part of the second.

Beach's first came when he stuffed it home from the left post from Jared Spurgeon and Blake Gal. Still on a five-on-three, Mitch Wahl's one-timer from the slot gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead 30-seconds into the second. Spurgeon and Tyler Johnson assisted.

Kootenay scored three unanswered , including their lone power play goal when Brayden McNabb blasted a shot from the point at 16:32 to even the score. Kootenay's Steele Boomer poked in a loose puck at 8:21 to give them a 3-2 lead going into the third.

Joey Leach's snap shot from the left point counted as the eventual game winner at 7:34 of the third period.

Beach scored a shorthanded goal, his 34th tally of the year, at 17:04 to bring Spokane back within one but the Chiefs couldn't find the equalizer and dropped to 29-19-3-1 on the season and two points behind Portland for fourth place in the Western Conference.
