Pirates Nail 13 Threes in Rout

SPOKANE, Wash. - Hitting season highs in shooting percentage, three-pointers and three-point percentage, Whitworth University rolled to a dominating 90-39 win over visiting Willamette University in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates improved to 9-9 overall and 5-4 in the NWC while the Bearcats dropped to 3-15, 1-8.

Leah Pomante and Liz Horiatis sparked the Pirates to a blistering first half. Pomante hit three three pointers, while Horiatis scored 10 of her 12 points to help Whitworth grab a 56-16 halftime lead. The Bucs made 58.3% (21-36) of their shots overall and 56.3% (9-16) of their three-point attempts to race away from Willamette from the very start. Whitworth grabbed first half leads of 13-0, 24-9, 37-12 and ended the half on a 19-4 run for a 40-point margin at the break.

Whitworth kept up the solid play throughout the second half, despite the large margin and every player on the bench seeing plenty of action. The Pirates made 50% (11-22) in the second half to finish with an overall shooting percentage of 55.2%, a season high. Whitworth finished 13-23 from beyond the arc for 56.5%, also a season high for both the number made the the total percentage.

Pomante led Whitworth with 14 points, while Horiatis added eight rebounds to her 12 points. Heather Burke scored 11 points off of the bench as Whitworth spread the scoring among 12 different players. Cassie Pilkinton dished seven assists.

Alex Zennan scored a game-high 15 points for Willamette, while Sophie Wilson added eight points off of the bench. The Bearcats were held to 22.2% (12-54) shooting in the game.

Whitworth held a commanding edge on the boards (43-27) and forced 23 turnovers by Willamette.

The Pirates will try to stretch their winning streak to four games on Saturday when they host Lewis & Clark College. Willamette will try to bounce back at Whitman College in Walla Walla.
