LOS ANGELES - Pete Carroll says he's leaving Southern California to become coach of the Seattle Seahawks because he could not pass up the challenge. The Seahawks hired the charismatic coach away from USC on Monday. At a news conference later on USC's campus, Carroll said "It hurts to separate."More >>

RENTON, Wash. -The Seattle Seahawks formally introduced Pete Carroll as their new head coach on Tuesday, saying he'd also be given additional responsibilities within the organization.

Carroll, who left USC amidst a rules violation investigation, will also have "operating duties" with the Seahawks, according to team CEO Tod Leiweke.  Leiweke said Carroll would have added responsibilities equivalent to a vice president of football operations. He'll work alongside whomever Seattle chooses as its new general manager.

"We will be in a relentless pursuit of a competitive edge in everything we do," said Carroll.

He said that pursuit included inserting competition into every nook and cranny of the organization, including the front office.

Leiweke, according to The Associated Press, said Carroll's additional duties would include the responsibility to manage the franchise's calendar and travel schedule, among other things. It is far more say in football operations that Carroll had in his one season as coach of the New York Jets in 1994 and of New England from 1997-99.

Carroll also said during the news conference in Renton that he would be involved in the hiring of a new general manager.

"This is a big job," Carroll said. "It's a job that encompasses a lot of aspects and I will need a lot of help."

Speaking specifically about what brand of football he'll bring to Seattle he said the Seahawks would have to run the ball to be successful.  He also said he wanted the team to be more physical on both sides of the ball, something that could be achieved through more effective team practices.

Carroll the player's coach?

When asked whether Carroll would be a "players coach" or not, he frankly dismissed the notion, saying that term is overrated.

"I could care less whether the players like me or not," he said.

I've grown from this experience

Carroll repeatedly pointed to his experiences at USC as proof he has changed since the first time he tried coaching in the National Football League.  He repeatedly pointed to the number of players he coached in California who are now playing at the highest level, saying that proves he's learned what it takes to coach at the professional level.  Plus, he said, "there's no compliance office!"

"I had an epiphany of what was important to me as a football coach," he said of his time since leaving New England after the '99 season. "It solidified a mentality that's now been put into place for 10 years."

Carroll said, as opposed to his first go-round in the NFL, he knows better how to communicate his vision to the rest of the players and the rest of the organization.
