Four Northwest seniors commit to Eastern Washington

A pair of high school seniors each from the states of Washington and Oregon have signed letters of intent to attend Eastern Washington University and play basketball for Eagles, EWU women's head coach Wendy Schuller has announced.

The duo from Washington are both 6-foot-2 -- post Laura Hughes from Hanford High School in Richland and forward Morganne Comstock from Kentlake High School in Kent. The other signees were 5-7 guard Meaghan Cichoke from Tualatin (Ore.) High School and 6-0 guard Aubrey Ashenfelter from Beaverton, Ore., and Southridge High School.

"Hats off to our entire coaching staff for an outstanding recruiting class," said Schuller. "These four young ladies have the opportunity to have very bright futures in the Eagle uniform. Each of them is a high character individual who is committed in the classroom as well as on the basketball floor. To say the least, they fit the Lady Eagle mold.

"We are very excited about what kind of players they are now and their potential impact on our program in the future," she added. "I can't say enough about the wonderful families they each come from and how much we've enjoyed the recruiting process with them."

Hughes averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds as a junior when she earned second team 3A All-State honors and was a first team All-Columbia Basin Big Nine League selection. She helped lead Hanford to the 2009 State 3A Tournament and finish with a 16-7 record.

Ashenfelter earned second team All-Metro League honors last season in the Portland area.

Cichoke was an honorable mention All-Pacific League selection as she helped her team to an 18-8 record and sixth-place finish at the Class 6A State Tournament in Oregon.
