Cougars take advantage of bye week to regroup

Posted: Updated:

Team bitten hard by injury bug

Even the Cougars themselves will admit they didn't play their best football in Saturday's loss to Arizona State.  They hope a bye week this week will help them recuperate so they can get back getting better.

They're not about to make excuses for their 1-5 record so far this season, but it's no secret the team is dealing with more than its fair share of injuries.  On the offensive line five players who started the season had missed nine games due to injury before last weekend's debacle. The Cougars have used five different starting lineups on the line since the season began, and there has yet to be two games this year where they've used the same starting offense and defense.

Now, with this week being a bye week, the Cougars finally have a chance to heal.  As gloomy as the rest of the season looks, the team hopes to get some players back on the field when they take on Cal in a couple of weeks.

"The bye week is at a perfect time for everybody on the team," said linebacker Andy Mattingly.  "There are a lot of guys who are injured right now that this week will get healthy."

"We have to regroup," added safety Xavier Hicks.  "We'll take this week to regroup as a team and we'll come back and make a turnaround."
