SPOKANE, Wash. - James Cohn's first goal of the year following a corner kick was the lone goal of the match as the University of San Diego completed a weekend sweep of the Pacific Northwest with a 1-0 West Coast Conference men's soccer victory Sunday over Gonzaga University.

The loss gave the Bulldogs (4-5-2; 1-3-0) a split of their weekend home series, Gonzaga downing Loyola Marymount University 2-1 in overtime Friday. USD (7-3-0, 3-0-0) escaped the University of Portland with a 2-1 victory over the 18th-ranked Pilots Friday despite playing a good portion of the match with only 10 players following a red card ejection.

"It was a well-played match," a disappointed Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "I thought we played a lot better than Friday. We possessed the ball better today and we didn't give USD many chances. I thought our guys played hard. I know they are disappointed."

Thorarinsson said he was especially pleased with the play of Colin Harrison and James Matern in the center midfield.

"I thought they played well today," Thorarinsson said. "And I thought our forwards played well."

"We came close a few times to getting Tye (Perdido) open, but we were a pass short and USD did a good job of breaking up the play," Thorarinsson said. "San Diego is a very solid team. They might be the best team in the league."

Once again senior keeper Scott Barnum was strong in goal with six saves.

"I thought Scott had another strong match," Thorarinsson said.

Of the last three goals Barnum has allowed, two have been on penalty kicks in a 1-0 loss at Santa Clara University in the final minute of play and Friday against LMU.

Two big saves late in the match kept the Bulldogs in the match with a chance to tie. The first came in the 78th minute when Cohn got a point blank sot at the corner of the goal that was saved by Barnum, the ball came free and a foul was called on USD on the ensuing play.

The second came in the 83rd minute when the Toreros got an odd-man rush as Gonzaga was sending everyone deep in an attempt to get the equalizer. Conor McFadden sent a thru ball to Patrick Wallen who launched a shot from 16 yards that Barnum made a falling kick save on to deny USD the insurance goal.

Barnum also had another important save in the 56th minute when he caught Stephen Posa's high, hard, straightaway shot from the top of the 18 just minutes prior to the USD goal.

The Bulldogs didn't seriously test USD keeper Kelin Briones who had just two second-half saves. One of the best chances for the Bulldogs was a thru ball from Nick Love to Tye Perdido in the 41st minute, Perdido shooting from the left wing and just missing the far post. Briones made an easy catch save off a weak header off a corner kick and easily stopped a low shot from the left wing late in the match for his two saves.

One call the Bulldogs felt didn't go their way was when Posa was called for a yellow card in the 64th minute when he tripped up Garre from just outside the top left wing of the 18 on an apparent breakaway. The Gonzaga bench wanted a red card, but the official issued only the yellow card caution.

The Bulldogs have just one match this upcoming week when they play at the University of San Francisco on Sunday, then return home for a rare Wednesday match against the University of Portland.
