PULLMAN, Wash. - University of Idaho senior Amanda Jacobs is first after the opening 18 holes of the 54-hole Inland Cup Golf Tournament at Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

Jacobs fired an even-par 72 for a two-stroke lead over four others - a group which includes Vandal sophomore Kayla Mortellaro. Their efforts helped Idaho to a tie for third in the 13-team field. With two rounds to play, the Vandals are at 21-over 309 along with Oregon State. Nevada leads the tournament at 307 with Sacramento State at 308.

Coach Lisa Johnson said the Vandals knew they left scoring opportunities on the course Monday.

"We left a lot of shots out there," she said. "However, we put ourselves in contention to win the tournament, which is our goal the first round."

Johnson saw an uncharacteristic drop in focus among her young but experienced team.

"We just weren't as mentally tough today as we have been in the past," she said. "The lesson we learned today is, even though we didn't feel we played very well, we're still at the top of the leaderboard."

Also for the Vandals were sophomores Teo Poplawski (80, T27), Frida Nilsson (83, T50) and Annika Karlsson (84, T55). Playing as individuals were freshman Allyssa Nilsson (83, T50) and sophomore Gracie Schory (86, T62).

Play continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday.
