Angels defeat Mariners in extra innings

Posted: Updated:

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Erick Aybar's two-out single drove home Bobby Abreu in the 10th inning, and the Los Angeles Angels overcame All-Star closer Brian Fuentes' latest blown save for a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night.

Mike Sweeney led off the ninth with a solo homer to center off Fuentes, erasing an outstanding home debut by Scott Kazmir. The Angels' new starter left with a 2-1 lead after battling Seattle ace Felix Hernandez through the first seven innings.

Abreu led off the 10th with a single off Miguel Batista. After Abreu reached third base on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, the Mariners intentionally walked Kendry Morales to pitch to Aybar, who drilled a grounder up the middle for his first hit of the night.

Game 2 of the three-game series with the Angels is tonight at 7:05, with Seattle right-hander Ian Snell scheduled to start against LA right-hander Jered Weaver.

Seattle Mariners reliever Sean White will have an MRI on his sore right shoulder today, and is expected to be sidelined the rest of the season. White hasn't pitched since Aug. 28, when he made his eighth consecutive scoreless appearance.

A non-roster invitee to spring training, the right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.80 ERA and career highs of 64 1-3 innings and 52 appearances this season.

Manager Don Wakamatsu says right-handed reliever Chris Jakubauskas wasn't available for  yesterday's series opener against the Los Angeles Angels because of arm soreness.

Wakamatsu says Doug Fister will make his next scheduled start despite leaving Sunday's game in Oakland with a blister.
