SPOKANE, Wash. - For the North Central, it was a chance to test drive a new team.  For the Ferris Saxons, Thursday night's opener appeared to be a continuation of last year's stellar season, as they beat up the Indians 59-0 at Joe Albi Stadium.

The Saxons starting quarterback, Connor Halliday, threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns.  He connected on all 9 passing attempts in the first half to show why he's being considered one of the best high school quarterbacks in the West.

"It was good, we came out ready to play," said Halliday following the game.  "Our defense came out and got a stop early and we were able to get a quick score.  We played well, and that's what we need to do to get ready for Prep next week."

Ferris' offense was so potent Thursday that officials had to implement a new rule passed last spring by the WIAA.  They decided to let the clock run in the second half when a team reaches a 45-point lead.  The Saxons reached that margin towards the end of the second quarter.

For North Central, Thursday's game was a rough start to a new season with a new coach in Brian Gardner.  New quarterback Zac Hill showed he has strong arm and decent accuracy when given a chance to find open receivers.  He threw for or 145 yards, completing 10 passes, and he would have had higher numbers were it not for a baffling amount of dropped balls by the Indians' receivers.

Ferris will look at he game tape and prepare for a more difficult game next week.  They'll meet Gonzaga Prep next week.  North Central will play on the road against East Valley.

The rest of the GSL teams will play their first game Friday night.  The featured game pits Lewis and Clark against Lake City from the Inland Empire League of North Idaho.  The game, which starts at 7 p.m., will be shown live on SWX, with KHQ/SWX sports anchor Sam Adams calling play-by-play. He'll be joined by Bill Ames in the announcer booth.
