Seahawks waive Bumpus

5 receivers still battling for two roster spots

He missed it by that much. Former Washington State standout receiver Michael Bumpus was cut by the Seattle Seahawks Wednesday, as the team had to reduce their roster to 75 players.

Bumpus signed on with Seattle last season as an undrafted free agent. He played in four games last year, catching five passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. But Bumpus became the odd man out with the addition of T.J. Houshmandzadeh to an already talented receivers group.

Still on the Seahawks' roster as receivers are Houshmandzadeh, Nate Burleson, Deion Branch and rookie Deon Butler. With Bumpus gone, Courtney Taylor, Ben Obomanu, Jordan Kent, Logan Payne and Mike Haas will battle it out for two remaining spots. The next cuts will be made on Saturday, at which point the Seahawks need to have just 53 players on their regular season roster.

Seahawks play final pre-season game Thursday night

The Seahawks will play their final exhibitiongame at home Thursday night against the Raiders and open the regular season at home Sept. 13 against the St. Louis Rams.

Seahawks coach Jim Mora says quarterback Matt Hasselbeck looked sharp in Seattle's 14-10 pre-season victory Saturday at Kansas City. Hasselbeck led touchdown drives at the end of the first half and start of the second. T.J. Houshmandzadeh and John Carlson caught scoring passes.

Newly signed running back Edgerrin James watched the game from the sideline, taking notes.

The Seahawks cut four players yesterday: defensive tackle Kevin Brown, fullback Dan Curran, linebacker Shane Simmons and tight end John Tereshinski.
