Improved Mariners still in wild card race

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE - The Mariners' victory over the Yankees was the 61st for Seattle this season. That equals the total wins for last season when the M's finished with 101 losses.

With 44 games to go, the Mariners are confident of demonstrating a big improvement this year. They're off today and start a road trip tomorrow at Detroit. The 10-3 win over the Yankees Sunday prevented a New York sweep of the four-game series. Seattle starter Doug Fister, who began the season in Class AA, earned his first major league win. Jose Lopez had three hits and drove in three runs. Ichiro Suzuki had two hits and drove in two runs.

At 61-57 Seattle is 10-and-a-half games behind the Angels in the AL West and six games behind Texas in the AL wild-card race.
