Indians split double header with Volcanoes

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane Indians and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes finished the remainder of last night's suspended game, and the Indians came out on top with a 4-3 victory. It was the Volcanoes who had the last laugh, as they squeaked out a 2-1 win in 10 innings in the nightcap.

Beginning the first game with 2-1 led from the bottom of the fourth inning, the Indians wasted no time adding to their lead as Zach Zaneski hit a two run home run over the left field fence to put the Indians up 4-1. The Volcanoes scored one run in each of the last two innings but were unable to tie or take the lead.

Indians starter Matt Thompson went four innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out five. Joseph Ortiz picked up the win after 3.2 innings of work and Justin King earned the save after 1.1 innings.

In game two of the double header, Salem-Keizer gained the lead in the first inning. Spokane tied it up in the bottom of the third on a Jared Prince single, scoring Joe Bonadonna from second. The score remained 1-1 until the Volcanoes broke the tie in the top of the 10th inning with single by Ryan Lollis that scored Juan Martinez from second.

Starter Braden Tullis went six innings, giving up four hits and one unearned run while fanning four batters. Reliever Reiner Bermudez was excellent in three innings, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts. Chris Matlock picked up the loss, his fifth of the season. Matlock gave up two hits and one run with three strikeouts in the 10th inning.

The Indians return to Avista Stadium tomorrow to play the fourth game of the five-game series against Salem-Keizer.
