MOSCOW, Idaho - After one and one half days of meetings and paperwork, the University of Idaho football team took to the field for the first time. And coach Robb Akey liked what he saw as the veterans and newcomers went through their inaugural drills.

"It was a great first day," Akey said after the lively two-hour session. "It was a fun first practice.

"We had a great deal of teaching time. We're focusing on paying attention to the little things; mastering technique."

Akey opened the practice by revealing the team's 2009 captains - Mike Iupati, Jonah Sataraka and Devon Sturdivant.

Iupati, a 6-foot-6, 325-pound senior guard from Anaheim, Calif., represents the offense; Sataraka, a 6-2, 280-pound junior tackle from Puyallup, Wash., represents the defense, and Devon Sturdivant, 5-11, 216 from Boise's Timberline High School, represents special teams.

The Vandals return to the field Sunday at 2:30 p.m., then follow with 9 a.m. practices Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before their first double day Thursday. They scrimmage for the first time Friday at 2:30 p .m.
