Media predict Vandals at No. 8

Apparently the media has a little more faith in Robb Akey's Idaho Vandals.  But just a little.  Coaches in the Western Athletic Conference predict Idaho will finish dead last in the conference this fall, while the media poll shows the Vandals at No. 8 - just ahead of New Mexico State.

For the second year in a row, Boise State was named favorite in both polls on Tuesday.  Nevada and Fresno State round out the top 3 in both polls.  The Broncos went 12-1 last year, finishing with a perfect 8-0 conference record for their sixth WAC title in the last seven years.  They lost by one point to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl, snapping a 12-game winning streak.

Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick was voted the Offensive Player of the Year by the media, while Boise State cornerback Kyle Wilson was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Kaepernick became the fifth quarterback in NCAA FBS history to throw for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 in the same season.  He racked up 2,849 yards in passing last year, scoring 22 touchdowns.  He added another 1,130 yards on the ground, including 17 touchdowns.  He was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year following his 2007 season - the year he was also named the WAC Freshman of the Year.

Wilson, a senior this year, was a first-team All-WAC team member last year, leading the Broncos with five interceptions.  He had a total of 15 passes defended and 35 tackles in 2008.  As a punt returner last year he averaged 14.2 yards per return and scored three touchdowns.
